No Left Turn in Education Statement on National 4th & 8th Grade Reading & Math Results
Philadelphia, Oct 24, 2022 — This morning, The Nation’s Report Card (NAEP) published the 2022 Mathematics and Reading Report Cards for Grades 4 and 8. Compared to 2019, before the pandemic, the average scores declined in both subjects and grades.
These dismal results come as no surprise to No Left Turn in Education (NLTE). We have been at the forefront of advocating the urgent need for equal access to quality education for ALL students for the past two years. The decline has been significant and began long before the pandemic and the results reveal an even greater need to revive American education by focusing on the basics: reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and science. Instead, schools across the nation have focused on justice and equity of outcomes. Unfortunately, we now have equity of bad outcomes.
The data also shines a spotlight on the need for educational choice and opportunities so that families, not the government, can decide the best learning environment for their children.
